Letting Go of Nail Biting: How Hypnotherapy Can Help

Do you bite your nails whenever you are feeling stressed or anxious? Or do you find yourself chewing on your nails when you are deeply focused? If the answer is yes, hypnotherapy could be the solution to your problem.

The nail-biting habit usually stems from your childhood and finds its way into adulthood, causing more than cosmetic side effects. If you biting your nails constantly, you might end up damaging the tissue around your nails and make it sore, resulting in abnormal nail growth.

Chronic nail-biters may feel conscious about the appearance of their nails, especially in a social situation, which may further impact self-confidence

Nail-biting prevention is not as easy as it sounds. Many healthcare providers have classified chronic nail-biting as a type of OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) that many individuals find difficult to quit on their own.

As an effective nail-biting treatment, hypnotherapy can help.

With hypnotherapy, you can better handle situations that are making you stressed or anxious and deal with them more effectively. In this blog, we will walk you through how hypnotherapy can help you in your journey of nail-biting prevention.

Let’s get started!

Reasons That Lead to Nail Biting

Often, it is not clear why you develop the habit of nail biting, however, once this habit takes hold, it can be challenging to control. Here are some of the common causes that lead to nail biting:

Impatience, Frustration, or Boredom

Once you’ve formed the habit of nail biting, it often becomes your default response to any situation that triggers feelings of irritation, frustration or boredom. For example, if you are waiting for someone, you may unknowingly resort to nail biting to keep yourself occupied till the person arrives.

Stress and Anxiety

Feeling stressed or anxious is one of the primary reasons why someone may develop a habit of nail biting. Such emotions manifest in the form of nervousness and chewing on your nails might seem like a brief respite from the pressures of stress and anxiety. It becomes a kind of coping mechanism.

Emotional or Psychological Problem

This destructive habit can also be associated with many mental and psychological conditions such as Tourette syndrome, separation anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder (MDD) and more.

Hypnosis for Nail Biting: Does It Work?

Nail biting is usually a temporary and not very harmful behaviour. However, for some people, it can turn into a serious, chronic nail biting problem that lasts for a long time. In such cases, it becomes hard to control or get rid of and can cause great damage to your nails and surrounding skin.

If you can’t stop biting your nails, hypnotherapy can help you manage, control, and even stop this habit. Nail biting is usually associated with certain triggering situations and emotions that drive this habit. As an alternative form of therapy, hypnotherapy helps you deal with these triggers in a healthier way, helping you quit nail biting.

In my hypnotherapy sessions, we will work towards identifying the emotions, feelings, or thought patterns that cause you to bite your nails. Together, we will work towards effectively managing them.

Eventually it will become second nature to control your own thoughts and feelings and acknowledge what your triggers are. Additionally, with healthier coping strategies in place, you will feel more empowered and confident to deal with future triggers effectively.

How Can Hypnotherapy Help Someone With Nail Biting?

It’s normal to feel stressed or anxious about certain things or situations from time to time. However, when these feelings lead to habits like excessively biting your nails, pulling your hair, or picking at your skin, it can have an adverse effect on your life. With a focus on relaxing your body and mind, hypnotherapy techniques can be very effective in nail biting prevention.

In my sessions, I may use one or more the following techniques to help you relax and dive into your subconscious mind:

Relaxation

Relaxation involves focusing on each part of your body and releasing tension. As you relax, you will find it easier to let go of your anxiety and stress. This further helps you quieten your mind and delve into your subconscious, where you can identify your emotional blocks that cause you to bite your nails.

Pattern Interruption Techniques

In this technique I will help you identify the triggers that entice you to bite your nails. Once you recognize a trigger, we will replace the nail-biting response with a healthier one. The new response could include hand tapping or repeating a positive message to yourself, such as “I’m feeling anxious, but I can choose not to bite my nails.” Frequently practising this technique will help you break the habit once and for all.

Anchoring Resource States

During hypnosis, I will guide you into a dreamlike state. Together, we will then explore situations that usually trigger your nail biting response. Then, we will work on replacing your feelings of stress and anxiety with feelings of calmness. When you reach this calm state, you will be asked to perform a physical action, like gently making a fist or rubbing your finger and thumb together. This action acts like a button that you can press in the future, whenever you are dealing with your triggers. Repeating the same action will help you remember that calm feeling, and eventually help you manage your nail-biting habit better.
