Earth Day is observed annually on April 22nd to raise public awareness about environmental issues and motivate people to make efforts to protect the environment. Earth Day celebrations and activities draw over a billion participants worldwide to promote a more sustainable future.
In the midst of these celebrations, though, many are struggling with a new kind of concern called climate anxiety or climate change anxiety. With the constant news concerns and alarming imagery depicting the worsening condition of our planet, it is easy to get overcome with a sense of anxiety and hopelessness.
Melting ice caps, rising temperatures and an increase in the frequency of catastrophic weather events are just a few indications that the environment is in crisis. However amongst these negative reports, there are positive events happening too, and with education on the matter becoming more prevalent, there is still hope!
Finding ways to cope with climate anxiety can be difficult, but hypnotherapy can become a way to alleviate these feelings. Once you gain control over your emotions you can work towards making a more positive change for both yourself and the environment.
As you celebrate Earth Day and make a commitment to preserve the environment, it’s important to remember to take care of your own psychological and physical health too.
Who is Most Affected by Climate Anxiety
Climate anxiety symptoms can project themselves into a variety of emotions such as sadness, anger, shame, loss, remorse, helplessness, and exhaustion. Many things could trigger these emotions, including direct effects (such as losing one’s home or source of income due to a natural calamity), exposure to global experiences through media, or anxiety over existential or future dangers.
Different people are impacted by climate change in different ways, but often climate anxiety in youth is the most common, as they become anxious about their future.
That being said, however, anyone concerned about the environment and its future can be affected by climate anxiety. This includes those who are directly impacted by climate change as well as those who have a big appreciation for our planet and its inhabitants.
Effective Methods for Coping With Climate Anxiety
1. Validate Your Emotions in a Positive Manner
Without being judgemental, accept and respect your emotions. It’s important to acknowledge exactly how climate change makes you feel. It is completely understandable to feel anxious, depressed, or worried about the future of the environment, so recognise these feelings as they come up rather than ignoring them. By doing this, you can face climate anxiety head-on and help ensure a more sustainable future for our world by healthily acknowledging your feelings.
2. Shift Your Focus Towards Manageable Things
As with other types of anxiety, obsessing over imaginary or irrational situations can make you feel even more helpless and uncertain. Focus on concrete steps that are within your control to reclaim your sense of control. By concentrating on feasible options, you can reduce your concern about climate change and actively contribute to the push towards a sustainable future. This helps you go from a depressing state of mind to one of positive involvement. An example may be educating your family, or signing a petition for what you believe in.
3. Talk With Like-Minded People
Look for people who can empathise with you and offer support and understanding. Creating a network of support can help lessen the psychological effects of climate change and instead have a positive effect. Building a feeling of community makes room for encouragement and understanding among people. When you work together, you can overcome the difficulties caused by climate fear and find strength and empowerment in your common goal and unity.
4. Consider Hypnotherapy for Holistic Healing
Hypnotherapy is a holistic way to reduce suffering if your fear of the climate is affecting your everyday life. By employing guided relaxation techniques, hypnotherapy provides an access point to your subconscious mind, which contains deeply ingrained thoughts and feelings. This alternative form of therapy addresses underlying worries and anxiety about climate change and can contribute to making you more resilient in handling environmental issues with calmness and practicality. In addition to treating symptoms, hypnosis therapy encourages emotional healing and a positive outlook on environmental issues, all of which can contribute toward the improvement of your overall well-being on Earth Day and beyond.
