Why Do Introverts Struggle with Public Speaking?

Introverts are not the only ones who suffer from glossophobia (fear of public speaking), but it is more common in them than in extroverts. Introverts often feel more comfortable on their own and may feel their energy draining in a crowd. These characteristics often make it difficult for them to speak in public. Let’s look into some reasons why this happens.

1. Easily Overstimulated

Introverts often thrive in solitude, and activities like public speaking, which involves addressing many people simultaneously can be extremely nerve-wracking. It also includes multiple sensory stimuli like noise, lights, and movements, which can further lead to a feeling of panic or stress.

While extroverts thrive in such environments, introverted people typically feel their energy drained, leading to fatigue and vulnerability. As public speaking involves having all eyes on you, this can make introverts feel exposed or judged.

2. Fear of Judgement

Introverts are highly self-critical, which often leads to overthinking. They are sensitive to how they are perceived by their audience and are often afraid of making mistakes. As they are hyper-aware of their shortcomings and preparedness, they place extremely high expectations on their own abilities. This further intensifies their anxiety and fuels their fear.

These subconscious thoughts can be debilitating and can lead to other problems like freezing or stage fright

If you have been through something similar, I can help. In my sessions, I use hypnosis for public speaking phobia to address the subconscious issues that often stop you from realising your full potential. This will help you overcome the fear of judgement and make you more confident in your skills.

How Your Subconscious Affects Your Public Speaking Skills

Our subconscious mind often has a direct relationship with our phobias. When it comes to public speaking, introverts may feel threatened by the idea of being judged. The amygdala, a part of your subconscious brain, reads this “threat” as a fight-or-flight situation.

It sends a signal to the hypothalamus, which then triggers a series of reactions that show up as symptoms such as sweaty palms, dry mouth, palpitations, and nausea associated with public speaking anxiety. Stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol increase your heart rate and blood pressure, and you may also experience shortness of breath.

The amygdala perceives the situation as do-or-die, and this sends the blood to your limbs, making your palms sweaty and limbs jittery. This often leads to forgetting your speech, making you stammer, and further setting in the panic.

With your brain trying to protect you, it stops producing saliva, and this leads to a dry mouth. You may also feel your voice close to prevent you from making noise, but this is a little rare.

These biological responses to stress can be dealt with effectively with hypnotherapy for fear of public speaking. Let’s understand how!
