Learn More About Hypnotherapy
What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a naturally occurring state where the analytical, conscious part of your mind becomes relaxed and easily distracted. We all enter into a form of hypnotic trance on a daily basis, often when we’re doing something that has become second nature to us like driving on a familiar route, washing the dishes or tying our shoe laces. When we allow our conscious thoughts to daydream, our unconscious mind becomes more open and receptive to communication.
What is hypnotherapy?
As a hypnotherapist, I utilise this altered state of perception to help you let go of self-sabotaging, limiting beliefs and adopt more helpful thoughts and behaviours.
When I’m explaining hypnotherapy to a new client, I often say: Let’s forget the word “hypnosis” for a moment.
Because that word carries so many unhelpful associations, like being made to cluck like a chicken or eat an onion thinking it’s an apple. Stage shows and TV have left many people with the impression that hypnosis is about mind control.
In reality, hypnosis is simply a natural, relaxing state – something you already slip into many times a day.
Think about when you’re driving somewhere and suddenly realise you’ve arrived without remembering each turn… or when you’re so absorbed in a book, you don’t hear someone calling your name. That’s a kind of trance. You’re still aware and in control, just more inwardly focused.
Hypnotherapy uses this same natural state, but with guidance and intention. Rather than slipping into it by accident, I guide you there gently and safely, using words and imagery to help your mind relax and become more open to positive suggestions.
And crucially, you’re not asleep or unconscious. You can accept or reject anything that’s said. If hypnotherapists could control minds, we’d all be billionaires. But we can’t, and wouldn’t want to.
Hypnosis isn’t something I do to you. It’s something we create together. You always have the ability to come out of it because you always have control.
“But what if I can’t be hypnotised?”
People often think they need to be highly suggestible or “go under” at the click of my fingers. But that’s not how it works.
You can’t be forced into hypnosis, just like you can’t be forced to relax. When someone tries to force us to do something, our natural instinct is to push back. Instead, I simply create the conditions where your mind feels safe enough to drift and absorb new ideas and solutions. This is why online hypnosis tends to be more effective, because when you’re at home, you’re naturally in an environment that feels safe and familiar, so your subconscious opens up more.
The more you allow, rather than try, the more easily it happens.
Let’s say you’re tired, and someone next to you yawns. That yawn is a suggestion. Your brain registers it and might go along with it – unless you resist it, say, because your boss is talking and you don’t want to be rude.
That’s how suggestions work. You accept what fits, and ignore what doesn’t.
So what does it feel like?
Most clients say it feels like a lovely daydream or guided meditation – relaxing, calm, and surprisingly familiar.
And when your mind is in that receptive state, it switches from being problem-focused to solution-focused. We can start rewiring old patterns at a deeper level and help you find new ways of looking at things.
As everyone’s problem and circumstances are unique, I tailor my approach to your individual needs and goals, using a combination of the following four approaches:
Curative Hypnotherapy
This is a highly specialised technique that is distinguished from all other forms of hypnotherapy by its unique aims and objectives. Rather than focusing on the problem itself, curative hypnotherapy seeks to find and then correct the root cause behind it so that the symptoms can be disposed of completely and permanently. After all, if your unconscious has gone to all this effort to create and maintain an undesirable behaviour, emotion, symptom or issue, then it must have a reason why. If this is not addressed, the symptom could return or possibly manifest itself in some other way.Curative hypnotherapy is an enjoyable and pain-free way to explore why your problem exists, helping you to update your response to the initial cause so that you can let go and move on.
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy
Solution focused hypnotherapy is a modern, evidence-based therapy that focuses on your future potential, not your past problems. It is a powerful, collaborative and positive approach to creating rapid and lasting change. During sessions, we design a clear and compelling picture of your desired future - what we call your "preferred future." This practical, forward-focused talk naturally shifts your mindset away from what's wrong and towards solutions, building motivation and self-belief. In hypnosis, we gently reinforce the positive future you've described, helping to rewire unhelpful thought patterns and embed new, healthier ones. You remain in control throughout, emerging feeling refreshed and equipped with a renewed sense of calm and capability to achieve your goals.
NLP & Coaching
Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) provides the powerful tools to eliminate inner conflict, limiting beliefs, and negative emotions by reframing the way you experience the world. Coaching provides the supportive and structured partnership to help you apply those tools effectively toward your goals. Each of us has a unique mental filter through which we view ourselves and those around us, which is why we all respond differently to the same set of circumstances. In our sessions, coaching helps you become aware of this process, giving you the power to take control of your thoughts and behaviours. Together, we then use practical NLP techniques to update that filter, allowing you to make positive changes more quickly.
Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy
Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy is a powerful fusion of two highly effective approaches: the practical, structured framework of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and the profound, relaxing power of clinical hypnosis. CBT provides the "roadmap" by helping you identify and reframe the negative thought patterns and beliefs that fuel difficult emotions and unhelpful behaviours. We then use hypnotherapy to make these cognitive shifts more profound and lasting.During sessions, while you are in a deeply relaxed state, your subconscious mind becomes more open to accepting these new, healthier ways of thinking. This powerful combination allows you to not just logically understand the changes you want to make, but to emotionally and instinctively embody them.
