Top 4 Commonly Used Hypnotherapy Techniques

Hypnotherapy is an age-old form of alternative treatment and offers solutions for multiple problems, like insomnia, depression and anxiety. It can help to break unhealthy habits and replace any negative responses with positive ones.

One of the ways we can do this is by targeting the subconscious mind using trance, as the subconscious mind does not use logic and reasoning. That is why it is easier to identify blocks and induce positive suggestions to invoke change from within.

Once you are out of trance, your subconscious relays the new suggestions over to the conscious part of your brain. Once the new suggestions are in your conscious awareness, it will be easier for you to respond in a completely different way. Once your brain identifies and accepts the new response pattern, it will repeat the same response every time.

In addition to that, hypnotherapy also induces a deep state of relaxation that is not only enjoyable but promotes further healing within. You are likely to feel a sense of comfort after a typical session and will be able to let go of deep-rooted fears and anxieties.

However, there are many other techniques used in hypnotherapy that will also help you reach your goals. Let us explore some of the more commonly used hypnotherapy techniques.

Top 4 Commonly Used Hypnotherapy Techniques

1. Visualisation

Visualisation is one of the most commonly used hypnotherapy techniques that helps induce a trance-like state, as well as makes positive suggestions. For example, in my sessions, I begin by asking clients to visualise a room that they have been in.

This includes the tiny details of the room, like the wallpaper, floor, shape of the windows and more. Once they have fully described the room to me, they are asked to visualise a room that they are not very familiar with.

Since they do not remember the exact details of the room, their mind is now open to suggestions. Similarly, visualisation is commonly used in hypnotherapy sessions to change a negative perception to a positive one or recall positive memories.

2. Eye Cues and Eye Fixation

The human brain is divided into two spheres—right and left. The right sphere is in charge of the more “creative” side of us, as well as the conscious side. The left side of the brain deals with the subconscious, as well as the “practical” side of us.

In a session, it can be easy to use eye cues to understand what side of the brain is being accessed. For example, if you are accessing the left side of the brain, you are likely to look more to your left during our conversation. This is when it is an ideal time to use positive suggestions.

Moreover, sometimes an object of focus can also be used to induce a trance-like state. For example, pendulums or swinging pocket watches are commonly used to induce a hypnotic trance. This technique works because the object keeps the conscious mind occupied, tires out your eyes and slowly opens up the subconscious to suggestion.

3. Changing Tone of Voice

Sometimes, changing the tone of voice can also prove to be majorly helpful in hypnotherapy. This is especially true when you are trying to make positive suggestions. A lot of the time, changing the tone of voice can bring forth quicker and more effective change.

For example, you can say the words “you may want to become relaxed” or “stop smoking” in a variety of different ways. You can say it softly or elongate and emphasise a certain focus word. You could also vary your speech by talking loudly or softly, whispering, shouting or using a different accent or a lisp.

4. Parts Therapy

Human behaviour is complex and there are always reasons as to why we do the things we do. Sometimes, you may engage in negative behaviour for a reward. In this case, the subconscious justifies the negative behaviour and excuses it. For example, you might start smoking because most of your colleagues smoke and you want to be involved in their conversation.

Parts therapy tells us that the mind is made up of multiple parts and that behaviour is one part of it. In my sessions, I will focus on the behaviour part to understand why a certain action is being taken. We will then work on coming up with a creative solution. For example, someone who smokes for social interaction could simply join a book club or develop a new hobby.
