How often have you heard a mentor, teacher, or friend tell you that confidence is the key to success, happiness and mental well-being? A personality study has shown that one in three Brits (34%) feel underconfident about themselves.
Typically, a confident person performs better at work, has great communication skills and better coping abilities when faced with setbacks and challenges.
Not everyone is naturally confident, and some people suffer from low self-esteem, preventing them from reaching their full potential. If you’re wondering how to look and feel more confident in life, connect with me, Susannah Saunders.
I’m a clinical hypnotherapist offering bespoke confidence-building hypnosis programmes. I use a blend of hypnotherapy, NLP techniques, and coaching to help you feel happier, and more assertive.

Why Do We Often Feel Underconfident?
Past experiences, both positive and negative, often impact how we feel about ourselves. Underconfidence can stem from trauma, childhood experiences or peer pressure, and occasionally confidence issues can be inherited. Generally, it is more common in women, as a result of social conditioning and societal pressures.
Some of the most common causes of confidence issues are:
- Growing up in an unsupportive or over-bearing family
- A history of physical, mental or sexual abuse
- Bullying
- Substance abuse
- Chronic depression, anxiety or other mental health disorder
- Obesity, IBS or other chronic physical conditions
Understanding the Connection Between the Subconscious Mind and Your Confidence
Our subconscious mind directly impacts how we perceive ourselves, our beliefs and our actions. It starts absorbing life experiences from an early age, yet, unlike our conscious mind, it can’t rationalise the incidents. For example, if a child overhears parents comparing their abilities to those of a sibling, it can leave them traumatised and underconfident for years to come.
The ‘inner voice’ often provides negative counsel instead of reaffirming and positive talk.
During my confidence-building hypnosis sessions, we will work to replace these negative feelings with positive affirmations, talking through your personal challenges, and establishing what it is you want to achieve. Over time, this will help you to be more confident at work and in your personal life.
How to Look and Feel More Confident
If you want to feel more confident, you can follow these tips:
1. Set Goals
When you suffer from underconfidence, it becomes difficult to achieve success or complete tasks. This can further affect your self-worth, starting a vicious cycle of confidence issues. The best way to overcome this is to set SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound) goals.
For instance, don’t say, ‘I will take part in a public speaking competition’. Instead, write down your goal as, ‘By the end of 2025, I will participate in a public speaking opportunity at my local community centre.’ This will help you stay focused and motivated, and once you reach the goal, you’ll feel more confident in your abilities.
2. Take Care of Yourself
If you’re wondering how to look and feel more confident, then you need to start prioritising self-care. Some examples include meditation, fitness regimes and yoga, however, you may just want to start with wearing your favourite outfit, eating a nutritious breakfast, or going for a morning walk before work. Confidence comes from within, so taking care of yourself is essential.
3. Acknowledge Achievements
Would you like to be more confident at work? Then, it’s important to push your limits while acknowledging your achievements and wins. Perhaps you’re missing out on bonuses and promotions because you’re underplaying your wins or not pushing yourself to take on something challenging.
Start by celebrating the small wins, making a list of your accomplishments, and mentioning them to your manager at your next performance review meeting.
4. Smile
Smiling, holding eye contact, sitting straight, and working on your overall body language can go a long way in making you feel more confident. Underconfidence and low self-esteem often manifest in sweaty palms, strained smiles, furrowed eyebrows and a slouched posture. If you want to appear more confident at work and in social gatherings, remember to smile, stand upright and have a firm handshake. You can start by practising in front of the mirror or with loved ones before trying it out in public.
How to Feel More Confident With Hypnotherapy
If you want to feel more confident, hypnotherapy is a tried and tested method that has helped countless individuals. Many people suffer from low self-belief and underconfidence, even when they are told how brilliant they are. Our subconscious mind often holds on to past trauma, preventing us from accepting praise or compliments.
During our hypnotherapy sessions, I’ll use visualisation cues and positive suggestions to tap into your subconscious and reinforce your sense of self-worth. These positive affirmations will help to replace negative self-talk and develop a more positive outlook on life.
People who suffer from confidence issues are often their own worst critics. Confidence-building hypnosis can change that, as we change the dialogue of your inner critic.
