A form of therapy that utilises hypnosis (a trance-like state in which a person is highly focused and concentrated), hypnotherapy definitely makes people pause and ask, “what is that?” when they hear about it. Some are sceptical, others are immediately drawn to it and see its potential, but everybody is curious. Because hypnotherapy is not a traditional treatment, it’s one that most people know little about. This is a shame because there are so many different ways that hypnotherapy can be useful and even life-saving. I’ve seen it many, many times in my 17-year career as a hypnotherapist.
So what can hypnotherapy be used for? Here are just some of the numerous options.
Anxiety and Stress
So common that it is nearly an epidemic in our modern, busy lives, nearly everybody you know is probably suffering from anxiety and stress. And while there are many different treatments for these ranging from exercise to medication, hypnotherapy is an incredibly effective option that can help give you back the freedom to relax and breathe more easily.
Phobias
If you’re ever seen depictions of hypnotherapy on TV or in movies, chances are pretty likely that it was in the context of treating phobias. And, indeed, one of the things that hypnotherapy is highly effective at treating is an irrational fear, like the fear of spiders or heights.
Substance Abuse
Another common depiction of hypnotherapy in media is for quitting cigarettes, which is, in fact, a real use, although it can actually be used for any type of substance abuse including the use of cannabis, alcohol, and other drugs. If you’ve tried again and again to quit a certain substance and found it impossible, hypnotherapy may be a real solution for you.
Sexual Dysfunction
Ranging from erectile dysfunction to low sexual desire to premature ejaculation and more, sexual dysfunction is actually much more common than most people realize, affecting about 43% of women and 31% of men. Unfortunately, many people don’t seek help for these issues because there is a stigma or they don’t even realize that what they are dealing with might be classified as a dysfunction. But if you have a sexual problem that interferes with your ability to have the sex life that you want, hypnotherapy could be the treatment you’re looking for.
Skin Conditions
One use for hypnotherapy that people tend to be surprised by is treating skin conditions such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, and warts. The general assumption tends to be that hypnotherapy is only effective for problems that start in the head and not the body but, in fact, there is a powerful connection between the mind and body and a holistic treatment like hypnotherapy can improve physical symptoms just as well as it can support those that people view as “mental” issues.
