Anxiety is one of the most common mental health disorders around the globe. Often, it is difficult to diagnose, so when you feel a little disoriented, you should start asking yourself the following questions:
- Am I excessively worrying or overthinking?
- Do I have constant panic attacks?
- Is my mouth dry and do I feel like I am not good enough even after everything I’ve overcome?
The answers to these questions can help you get a better handle on your mental state. At Cityhypno, with my bespoke therapy plans, especially curated to suit your personality, I aim to reconnect you with your innermost thoughts in a way that helps you understand where you are mentally.
That said – “How to Battle Anxiety?” has been the most frequently asked question and in today’s blog, I have brought together a few simple ways that can help you cope with your anxious thoughts.
Let’s dive right in!
1. Relax Your Breathing Pattern
Anxiety or panic attacks are commonly associated with uneven or stopped breathing, so it is only natural that you concentrate on getting your breath back on track first.
You might feel you are under a lot of stress, that your chest feels suddenly heavy, in a way that restricts your breathing. You might also feel that your airway is blocking and shutting down, but that is not the case.
There are, however, simple management tips that can help in this situation. If you are someone that faces breathing problems often, you should keep an inhaler with you at all times.
Similarly, breathing in a brown bag is also very useful when you’re struggling to catch your breath.
2. Deal With Dissociation
A collective of natural and bodily instincts results in something known as dissociation; wherein a person might believe that their body is giving them a warning that they’re about to experience something discomforting; probably something that resembles a panic or anxiety attack.
In simple terms, people who often get these instincts known as dissociation tendencies, often feel like they’re losing touch with reality or time.
Now for the solution, all you have to do is make conscious efforts of taking mental notes of all that’s happening around you. Try to be close to nature, say out loud what you feel, smell and feel. You must make yourself believe that this too shall pass and eventually, it will.
With a little bit of conscious awareness and practice, you will notice the improvements yourself!
3. Deal With Derealisation
Generally, when people face unfavourable conditions like anxiety and it starts to peak, you might witness things around you that may look strange, like you have entered some kind of realm that seems unreal. Your eyes make you believe that the room in which you are in, starts looking odd and off, (of course, this is very subjective and the experience may differ from person to person).
When this happens, you should know that an anxiety attack is approaching. Derealisation in this case, can be considered as a warning sign.
To deal with derealisation, the best solution is grounding. Make yourself remember all the things you see around you, touching those objects and vocalising it, to give yourself mental reassurances. This can help you calm down, at least till the time you seek the necessary professional help you need for a more robust solution.
